Tradie Doug’s got a job to do… but nothing’s going to plan.
Armed with a wheelbarrow, a pile of bricks, and a stream of questionable ideas, Doug fumbles his way through a series of increasingly chaotic tasks.
Rock Bottom is a solo clown and circus-theatre work where children don’t just watch — they actively help shape the action, calling out ideas as Doug tries (and often fails) to get the job done.
Developed with support from Creative New Zealand, Rock Bottom has been presented at Hamilton Arts Festival, Holloway Hoopla, and regional touring events.
The work has been shaped in collaboration with director Thom Monckton and composer Jeremy Mayall, helping shape the physical language, rhythm, and comedic style of the show.
For Festivals & Family Events
Big laughs. Real risk. Backyard mayhem.
Combining clowning, circus skills, and inventive use of everyday “worksite” props, Rock Bottom is a high-energy, physically driven performance grounded in genuine interaction.
No two shows are the same — children call out solutions, and Doug responds in real time, creating a lively, unpredictable exchange between performer and audience.
For Schools & Educators
Rock Bottom creates a playful space where tamariki can explore what happens when things don’t go to plan.
Rather than delivering messages, the show invites children into a live conversation — offering ideas, testing solutions, and watching them unfold on stage.
Through humour, failure, and persistence, Doug models ways of navigating frustration, problem-solving, and trying again.
Nic brings a background in social work and youth development, grounding the show in real experience supporting young people to navigate challenge and build resilience.
